[EEnglish] before VS formerly

cá nhân tớ trước kia không bao dùng từ "formerly" mà hầu như toàn dùng "before" khi muốn nói về "trước kia".

1. before <preposition , conjunction , & adverb>
cách dùng phổ biến nhất của before là dùng làm preposition (giới từ) - dùng cho cả thời gian và địa điểm.

VD: she had to rest before dinner


before + 1 thời điểm / 1 "địa điểm"

2. formerly <adv>
formerly chỉ có cách dùng duy nhất là làm trạng từ (adverb).

E: In the past; in earlier times
VD: The European Union was formerly called the European Community.

bình thường không biết từ formerly, mình sẽ viết câu này thành
Before, the European Union was called the European Community.
Hay 
The European Union was called the European Community before.

Nghe " có vẻ " sai. Vì before thường được dùng làm prep và sẽ đi kèm một mốc thời gian nào đó.

Trong http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/before có ví dụ:

his playing days had ended six years before => cái này theo tớ nên thay before bằng ago.

it’s never happened to me before => câu này ok.

KẾT LUẬN: nếu không có một mốc thời gian cụ thể mà chỉ muốn nói "trước đây" thì nên dùng formerly. Formerly là adv nên thường đi sau động từ to be hoặc trước động từ thường:

- ... was formerly ... / ... formerly Ved ...
Eg: the building formerly housed the National Assembly

- danh từ/ cụm danh từ, formerly + danh từ 
VD:
Mumbai, formerly Bombay
The listed building, formerly the Marvic Hotel, has since been twice extended.
